Phenotypic Characterization of Eosinophilic Esophagitis in a Large Multicenter Patient Population from the Consortium for Food Allergy Research

Abstract: Gastrointestinal eosinophilia is present in approximately 10% of patients with EoE; the symptom-diagnosis time gap is influenced by age, race, food allergy, and atopic dermatitis; symptoms vary with race; concurrent infectious/immunologic disorders and mental health disorders are common; and the level of esophageal eosinophils is comparable in patients with and without fibrostenotic features.

“…The remaining EGIDs cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, with blood in the stool also occurring in some patients with colitis. 6 FPIES, FPIP, and food proteineinduced allergic dysmotility disorders affect children more commonly during infancy. Although FPIES can cause nonspecific GI symptoms (abdominal pain, vomiting, and/or diarrhea) and failure to thrive in the chronic phase, children with acute FPIES can experience shock in the event of reexposure to the culprit food after a period of avoidance.…”

“…In evaluating 20 to 27 OFCs with reactions for each food and more than 446 accidental reactions, the data support the conclusion that these exposures were not associated with significant increases in sensitization to milk, egg, or peanut. 17 Table I 13,17,18 provides practical lessons from these studies that could be used for educating families about food allergy management.…”

“…CoFAR also sought to gain insights into EoE by establishing a registry enrolling children and adult subjects with this disease. 18 The registry includes 705 subjects, with age at enrollment ranging from 0.9 to 56.2 years (median, 11.2 years). Failure to thrive was common (21%), and gastrointestinal eosinophilia was noted in about 10% of the cohort.…”
