Phenotypic composition of salivary gland tumors: an application of principle component analysis to tissue microarray data

Abstract: The tissue organization of the salivary gland is complex, and a large number of salivary gland tumor entities with a broad morphologic spectrum are listed, creating tumor classification schema for the salivary glands that are difficult to understand. In the present study, we attempted to examine how the anatomical components of the salivary gland are associated with morphological subtypes of tumors. We selected a panel of 12 molecules, which labeled one or some of the components, with all of the markers coveri… Show more

“…Iwafuchi et al (18) first used TMA for analyzing molecular features of these tumors. By evaluating the expression of a large panel of proteins in different salivary gland neoplasias, these authors concluded that SGTs may be well characterized using markers only toward myoepithelial, luminal and basal cells.…”

“…2 Half of salivary gland tumors are pleomorphic adenomas. 3 Malignant tumors are relatively rare. Some of them are developing in pleomorphic adenomas but the pathomechanism of carcinogenesis and prognostic factors of these cases are still under debate.…”

“…Hierarchical clustering analysis applied to immunostaining results for 18 different markers showed that synovial sarcomas, leiomyosarcomas, hemangiopericytomas, and solitary fibrous tumors clustered distinctly [84]. Using principle component analysis to characterize salivary gland tumors resulted in three components using a panel of 15 markers [89].…”
