Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and content of flavonoid compounds in wheat seedlings at the action of hypothermia and hydrogen sulfide donor

Abstract: At present hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is considered as one of the signal mediators in plant cells. However, its role in formation of plant resistance to low temperatures and, in particular, in regulation of secondary metabolism under stress conditions remains poorly understood. The influence of H 2 S donor sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and content of flavonoids in wheat seedlings at normal temperature (21 °C) and under cold hardening conditions (7 days at 3 °C) was stud… Show more

“…An increase in survival after freezing of winter wheat seedlings was observed when they were pretreated with 0.1 or 0.5 mM NaHS. One of the components of stress-protective effect of H 2 S donor was the phenylalanine ammonia lyase-dependent accumulation of flavonoid compounds with high antioxidant activity and reduction of the effects of oxidative stress ( Kolupaev et al., 2018 ; Kolupaev et al, 2019a ). Grapes ( Vitis vinifera ) under the influence of exogenous hydrogen sulfide at low temperatures showed an increase in SOD activity ( Fu et al., 2013 ).…”

“…One of the mechanisms of the H 2 S donor's positive effect on the resistance of wheat seedlings to hypothermia is the accumulation of flavonoid compounds with high antioxidant activity and reducing the effects of secondary oxidative stress. These processes depend on the activity of phenylalanine ammonium lyase [197]. The effect of exogenous carbon monoxide on the processes of plant adaptation requires deeper and more thorough investigation.…”
