Phenylpropanoids from the leaves ofAcanthopanax koreanumand their antioxidant activity

Abstract: By various chromatographic methods, one new phenylpropanoid, acanthopanic acid (1), and three known compounds, 1,2-O-dicaffeoylcyclopenta-3-ol (2), (4S)-α-terpineol 8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), and rutin (4), were isolated from the methanol extract of the Acanthopanax koreanum leaves. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, and their antioxidant activities were evaluated by the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) radical scavenging 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate as… Show more

“…The comparison of the NMR spectra of compound 8 with literature data (Nhiem et al, 2011) led to its identification as a monoterpene glycoside (4S)-a-terpineol 8-O-b-D-glucopyranoside, isolated earlier from Acanthopanax koreanum. Similarly, on the basis of analysis of NMR and specific optical rotation data ( [a] D 20 À38°(c 0.1, MeOH)), compound 9 was identified as icariside B 6 (7(8)-dihydro-b-ionone 3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside), isolated earlier from the aqueous extract of Epimedium grandiflorum (Miyase et al, 1988).…”

“…Compound 2 is commonly known as α-terpineol-β-D-O-glucopyranoside or α-terpinyl-β-glucoside. Nhiem et al [31] isolated this compound from a methanol extract of Acanthopanax koreanum leaves, although it did not possess antioxidant activity. This compound is also found in other plant parts such as apricot fruits [29], sweet potatoes [30], the aerial parts of Ligularia alticola [32], and an ethyl acetate extract of Saccocalyx satureioides [33].…”
