“…It is known that male and female fish can release a wide range of sex steroids into the water, which exert effects on the reproductive behavior and physiology in their conspecifics (Munakata and Kobayashi, 2009). In fact, male pheromones have been used to induce ovulation and spawning in zebrafish (Brachydario rerio) (Lambert et al, 1986), Pacific herring (Clupea harengus pallasi) (Carosfeld et al, 1997) (Sorensen et al, 2005). It has also been described that hormonal treatments increase the releasing rate of pheromones into the water, as demonstrated in male tench (Tinca tinca) treated with a combined GnRHa and dopamine antagonist treatment (Pinillos et al, 2002) and goldfish treated with hCG injections (Sorensen et al, 2005).…”

“…Pacific herring are primitive teleosts that spawn in large schools without physical interactions between sexes; this is considered ancestral to other teleost mating systems (Carolsfeld et al, 1997). It has been documented that male herring spawn first and the release of milt in the water attracts and induces spawning in females as well as other males (Hay, 1985;Carolsfeld et al, 1997). For example, Hay (1985) observed large regions of the coast with sperm in the water (known as "white water") with no egg deposition, and subsequently found that males were spent while females were only partially spent.…”

“…Indeed, the presence of molecules specifically binding sex steroids is a prerequisite for hormones to carry on their biological function through the regulation of gene expression (Ozawa, 2005;Wierman, 2007). It is well known that sex steroid hormones can function as pheromones, hence can inform about the sexual status of the opposite sex (Carolsfeld et al, 1997;Devidze et al, 2006;Mayer et al, 1994;Olsen and Liley, 1993;Sorensen et al, 1991Sorensen et al, , 1995. In this context, the presence of a PR in the olfactory organ of the Salmo trutta fario is particularly relevant.…”
