Philanthropic Mobility and the Influence of Duration of Donor Residency on Donation Choices

Abstract: Scholars have long been interested in what influences philanthropic behavior. However, little is known about the effects of length of residency on charitable gifts to local and non-local organizations. Using 2010 survey data from 470 older individuals, we examine whether donors' geographic relocations influence philanthropic behavior and whether these moves are a bigger challenge for some types of nonprofits than others. We find variations in giving to specific types of nonprofits based on residency duration. … Show more

“…De Oliveira et al (2012) concluded that religiosity is the prime motive for the contributions to day-to-day charity-giving for low-income Americans. According to Pharoah and Tanner (1997), Nesbit et al (2013) and Prouteau and Sardinha (2013) charity is more appropriate to be given regularly. “…Of 343 surveys, results indicated a positive relationship between residency status, sense of belonging, and interest in giving (Nesbit et al, 2015). Additionally, giving increased as residency duration increased (Nesbit et al, 2015). The results from this research are beneficial to the current study for examining the relationship between residency near and far from the institution.…”

“…Nesbit, Christensen, Tschirhart, Clerkin, and Paarlberg (2015) researched nonprofit charitable organizations and the impact of donor relocation on the number of incoming gifts. Nesbit et al (2015) chose to study Wilmington, NC due to its retirement nature where surveys were electronically released asking for information on philanthropic nature, residential history, and organizational interest (Nesbit et al, 2015). Of 343 surveys, results indicated a positive relationship between residency status, sense of belonging, and interest in giving (Nesbit et al, 2015).…”
