Philosophy in Science: Can Philosophers of Science Permeate through Science and Produce Scientific Knowledge?

Abstract: Most philosophers of science do philosophy 'on' science. By contrast, others do philosophy 'in' science ('PinS'), that is, they use philosophical tools to address scientific problems and to provide scientifically useful proposals. Here, we consider the evidence in favour of a trend of this nature. We proceed in two stages. First, we identify relevant authors and articles empirically with bibliometric tools, given that PinS would be likely to infiltrate science and thus to be published in scientific journals ('i… Show more

“…Thus, what is addressed here is not only the prospect of applying ME to ecology, but also whether heuristics developed from the philosophy of science can indeed contribute to science-in-the-making, more specifically, to ongoing scientific practice in ecology. This is in accordance with prior suggestions in the literature that both philosophy can contribute to science, and science can be relevant to the reassessment of philosophical stances (e.g., Chang 1999Chang , 2014Ankeny et al 2011; Kosolosky 2012; Boumans and Leonelli 2013; Boon Boon, 2015;Mallaterre et al 2019;Poliseli 2020;Pradeu et al 2021).…”

“…She takes dispositions to be intrinsic properties. This constitutes a metaphysically loaded view on dispositions, which is perfectly suited for Laplane's goal of using clearly defined metaphysical categories to assist in the clarification of scientific debates or in the development of scientific hypothesis, in the tradition of philosophy "in" science Pradeu et al, 2021). Therefore, Laplane would reformulate my question about the extrinsicness of stemness as a question concerning its relationality or its systematicity.…”

“…The idea that Philosophy in Science (PinS) is a distinctive way of doing philosophy (Laplane et al 2019;Pradeu et al 2021) that some but not all philosophers of science engage in presupposes a distinction between philosophical problems and scientific problems. Under the influence of Quine (1953), I was skeptical of that idea at the start of my career.…”
