Phomoxanthone A, Compound of Endophytic Fungi Paecilomyces sp. and Its Potential Antimicrobial and Antiparasitic

Abstract: The present work reports the isolation and biological evaluation of three dimeric xanthones from Paecilomyces sp. EJC01.1 isolated as endophytic from Schnella splendens, a typical plant of the Amazon. The compounds phomoxanthone A (1), phomoxanthone B (2) and dicerandrol B (3) were isolated by chromatographic procedures and identified by spectroscopic methods of 1D and 2D NMR and MS. The extracts and compound 1 showed antimicrobial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, … Show more

“…All assays were performed in triplicate at three different times using amphotericin B (0.20–27 μM) as the reference drug. Cell viability was measured using a colorimetric methyl thiazole tetrazolium (MTT) assay [ 23 ]. The results were used to calculate the 50% cell cytotoxicity (CC 50 ).…”

“…Molecular docking against S-ribosyl-homocysteine lyase (LuxS) suggests the interaction between 42 and two critical residues, His58 and Cys126, which play essential roles in the catalytic mechanism of LuxS in B. subtilis . Quantum studies utilizing density functional theory have further demonstrated a low gap value of 5.982 eV, indicating the high reactivity of this compound [ 89 ].…”

“…The presence of endophytic microorganisms within the plant is known to give rise to bioactive compounds akin to those found in their host ( Gouda et al, 2016 ). This approach is in line with the rational use of natural sources, as it makes it possible to obtain bioactive compounds without the need to cut a single tree ( Ramos et al, 2022 ).…”
