Phonic and Motor Stereotypies in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Video Analysis and Neurological Characterization

Abstract: Stereotypies are among the core symptoms of Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and can cause significant clinical impairment. At present, phonic stereotypies in ASD have been scarcely explored. This study investigates the frequency, variability, and typologies of phonic and motor stereotypies in children with ASD and their association with clinical neurological variables. We examined 35 patients by recording standardized video sessions and administering the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (AD… Show more

“…Different reasons could explain the presence of stereotypies. Certainly, cognitive disability is one of them as they could be considered to be a primitive form of communication [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]; unsurprisingly, low scores on the Vineland-II are correlated with greater severity and frequency of stereotypies in our population.…”

“…As a transitional object, teachers of autistic children allow the child to take the object from one activity to another (Kapp, et al, 2019). Educators maintain a serene demeanor in class (Cardona, et al, 2016;Lanzarini, et al, 2021). Other research objectives included determining whether male or female teachers use different methods to control a child's involuntary body movement based on their gender.…”
