Phosphorus is an essential macronutrient required for plant growth and development. It is central to many biological processes, including nucleic acid synthesis, respiration, and enzymatic activity. However, the strong adsorption of phosphorus by minerals in the soil decreases its availability to plants, thus reducing the productivity of agricultural and forestry ecosystems. This has resulted in a complete dependence on non-renewable chemical fertilizers that are environmentally damaging. Alternative strategies must be identified and implemented to help crops acquire phosphorus more sustainably. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding and utilization of soil microbes to both solubilize inorganic phosphate from insoluble forms and allocate it directly to crop plants. Specifically, we focus on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, ectomycorrhizal fungi, and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. Each of these play a major role in natural and agroecosystems, and their use as bioinoculants is an increasing trend in agricultural practices.

In Bebrütungsversuchen wurde die Wirkung von Stroh‐ und Maiswurzelextrakten auf die Löslichkeit von Boden‐ und Düngerphosphat geprüft mit folgendem Ergebnis: 1. Bebrütung einer P‐armen bzw. P‐reichen Ackerbraunerde (1 bis 14 Tage) nach Zusatz von Extrakt aus unverrottetem Stroh (10 g Stroh/100 g Boden) hatte gegenüber dem Kontrollzusatz von KH2PO4 keine wesentlichen Auswirkungen auf die H2O‐ und CAL‐P‐Fraktion, förderte aber die Umwandlung von „leichtlöslichen”︁ (−15 bis −40 ppm) in „schwerer lösliche”︁ Fe‐ und Al‐Phosphate (+15 bis +20 ppm) deutlich. Durch Zusatz von Extrakt aus verrottetem Stroh wurde die Menge an H2O‐extrahierbarem P und „leichtlöslichen”︁ Fe‐ und Al‐Phosphaten erniedrigt, die Menge an CAL‐extrahierbarem P und „schwerer löslichen”︁ Fe‐ und Al‐Phosphaten dagegen erhöht. 2. Bebrütung der P‐reichen Bodenvariante mit Maiswurzelextrakt (Wurzel: Boden = 1:3) für 1 Tag ergab eine geringere Festlegung von Düngerphosphat (34 gegenüber 42%) sowie einen Rückgang des als „schwerer löslicher”︁ Fe‐ und Al‐P wiedergefundenen Düngerphosphats (von 31 auf 11%); nach 14 Tagen war die Fixierung dagegen deutlich erhöht.
