Phosphomethylated Polyethyleneimine-immobilized Chelating Resin: Role of Phosphomethylation Rate on Solid-Phase Extraction of Trace Elements

Abstract: Chelating resins immobilizing phosphomethylated polyethyleneimine (PM-PEI) with different phosphomethylation (PM) rates were prepared by using different amounts of both phosphonic acid and paraformaldehyde in the phosphomethylation of PEI immobilized on a methacrylate resin as a base resin. The extraction of many elements improved with increasing PM rate; REEs, Be, Fe, Mo, Ti, and V were quantitatively extracted at pH 2. The elution of the elements tended to become difficult with increasing PM rate. When a PM-… Show more

“…Trivalent cations would reduce the electrostatic repulsion between the sulfonate groups or, even more directly, convergently draw the distal two or three points on the polymer up to themselves by bridging the sulfonate groups. 29 Apparent particular trends such as lanthanide contraction in the SF were not observed. RIX was calculated from IXmax and IXobs as the value of ion-exchange rates for each of Ln 3+ after correcting the effect of resin shrinking.…”

“…Solid-phase extraction is widely utilized for separation and preconcentration of trace elements; [1][2][3][4] various solid-phase extraction materials, including chelating resin, are proposed even now. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] A chelating resin immobilizing carboxymethylated polyethyleneimine (CM-PEI), which is commercially available as Presep PolyChelate (FUJIFILM Wako Pure Chemical), has an excellent ability for solid-phase extraction of trace elements. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] This resin is prepared by immobilizing PEI on a porous methacrylate resin (copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and then carboxymethylating amino groups in the PEI using sodium monochloroacetate.…”
