Phosphorus Leaching from Biosolids‐Amended Sandy Soils

Abstract: Increasing emphasis on phosphorus (P)-based nutrient management underscores the need to understand P behavior in soils amended with biosolids and manures. Laboratory and greenhouse column studies characterized P forms and leachability of eight biosolids products, chicken manure (CM), and commercial fertilizer (triple superphosphate, TSP). “…Similarly, monthly leaching loss of DP from CDM applied to cool-season turfgrass was greatest and most different from controls when little ground cover was in place (Easton and Petrovic 2004). In the present study, leaching loss of DP in the filtered fraction of leachate and differences between the sprigged and transplanted sod treatments were equally small during early establishment and after maintenance applications of P. The percent of applied P lost as DP in leachate from 0 d to 110 d after planting in this study was comparable that lost during four leaching events after 224 kg P ha À1 was applied as selected biosolids sources on perennial grass (Elliott et al 2002). “…Chen et al (2006) found that 62-98% of total P leaching occurred in the first three events in a column experiment with inorganic P and organic P application with leachate collected weekly. At very high P application rates of 56 and 224 kg P ha -1 , Elliott et al (2002) reported that 12 and 75 kg P ha -1 were lost from sandy soil to 40 cm depth when applied as triple superphosphate while 3-11 kg P ha -1 was lost from chicken manure applied at the same rates. Loss of K through leaching was also significant, equivalent to 20 kg K ha -1 from the recommended application.…”
