-Effects of phosphorus addition to HZSM-5 on ethanol conversion to propylene were evaluated. Catalysts were characterized by XRF, XRD, nitrogen adsorption, 27Al and 31 P MAS NMR, n-propylamine and ammonia TPD. Increasing P content decreased the strength and density of acid total sites. Ethanol dehydration was carried out in a fixed bed reactor operating at atmospheric pressure. Conversion was around 100% for all catalysts. 1.2 wt% of P catalyst showed the highest propylene yield, and was used to evaluate temperature and ethanol partial pressure effects on the product distribution. The highest propylene accumulated productivity was obtained for an ethanol partial pressure of 0.4 atm. Propylene formation was favored in the temperature range 475-500 °C. Significant changes in the product distribution as a function of time on stream were observed at higher temperatures, suggesting stronger catalyst deactivation. The ethylene yield decreased up to 500 °C, rising significantly at 550 °C, possibly due to heavier product cracking reactions.

Given that ethanol can be obtained from abundant biomass resources (e.g., crops, sugarcane, cellulose, and algae), waste, and CO2, its conversion into value‐added chemicals holds promise for the sustainable production of high‐demand chemical commodities. Nonoxygenated chemicals, including light olefins, 1,3‐butadiene, aromatics, and gasoline, are some of the most important of these commodities, substantially contributing to modern lifestyles. Despite the industrial implementation of some ethanol‐to‐hydrocarbons processes, several fundamental questions and technological challenges remain unaddressed. In addition, the utilization of ethanol as an intermediate provides new opportunities for the direct valorization of CO and CO2. Herein, the recent advances in the design of ethanol conversion catalysts are summarized, providing mechanistic insights into the corresponding reactions and catalyst deactivation, and discussing the related future research directions, including the exploitation of active site proximity to achieve better synergistic effects for reactions involving ethanol.

Flüssige Kohlenwasserstoffe nehmen aufgrund ihrer hohen Energiedichte und guten Transportfähigkeit eine Schlüsselrolle in der globalen Energieversorgung ein. Eine vergleichbare Bedeutung haben niedere Alkene wie Ethylen und Propylen in der Produktion von Verbrauchsgütern. In einer Gesellschaft der Nach‐Erdöl‐Zeit wird die Produktion von Kraftstoffen und Alkenen auf alternative Quellen wie Biomasse, Kohle, Erdgas und CO2 angewiesen sein. Die Umwandlung von Methanol in Kohlenwasserstoffe, bekannt als Methanol‐to‐ Hydrocarbons(MTH)‐Reaktion, könnte eine zentrale Rolle auf diesem Weg einnehmen, weil je nach Wahl des Katalysators und der Reaktionsbedingungen gezielt Benzin (Methanol‐to‐Gasoline, MTG) oder Alkene (Methanol‐to‐Olefins, MTO) hergestellt werden können. Dieser Aufsatz beschreibt eine Reihe von industriellen MTH‐Projekten, die in den letzten Jahren realisiert wurden, sowie den aktuellen Stand der Grundlagenforschung zur Synthese und Anwendung von mikroporösen Materialien für die gezielte Veränderung von Selektivität und Lebensdauer der Katalysatoren.
