Photo-Fenton and Fenton-like processes for the treatment of the antineoplastic drug 5-fluorouracil under simulated solar radiation

Abstract: In the present study, photo-Fenton and Fenton-like processes were investigated for the degradation and mineralization of the antineoplastic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). For the optimization of photo-Fenton treatment under simulated solar light (SSL) radiation, the effects of several operating parameters (i.e., 5-FU concentration, Fe, and oxidant concentration) on the treatment efficiency were studied. According to the results, SSL/[Fe(CΟ)]/ΗΟ process was the most efficient, since faster degradation of 5-FU and … Show more

“…In other studies, low toxicity was recorded for the initial solution of 5-FU and the solution at the end of the photo-Fenton-like (sunlight/Fe(III)/Η 2 Ο 2 ) treatment, while an increase in the overall toxicity was observed only at the first stages of Fe(III)/Η 2 Ο 2 and Fe(III)/S 2 O 8 2À processes. All iron-catalyzed processes followed quite similar transformation pathways, which included defluorination-hydroxylation as well as pyrimidine ring opening in 5-FU molecule (Koltsakidou et al 2017).…”

“…The equipment used in the study as well as the experimental conditions for the photo-Fenton experiments has been reported in detail previously (Koltsakidou et al 2017b). Briefly, the simulated solar irradiation was conducted by Atlas Suntest CPS+ (Germany), which was equipped with a xenon lamp (< 290 nm) with a constant irradiance of 500 Wm −2 .…”

“…Nevertheless, the traditional homogenous Fenton processes include obvious and inevitable shortcomings, such as production of iron containing sludge, low pH (pH < 3.0), large amount of H 2 O 2 , requirement for secondary treatment and difficult regeneration of the catalyst, which have greatly restricted their wide applications. To solve this problem, a "Fenton-like" reaction, which can surmount the above-mentioned adverse conditions as, for example, the reduction of H 2 O 2 by modifying the process going towards the photo-Fenton reaction, has been considered as one of the most effective methods [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. Therefore, the key point is to exploit suitable semiconducting, heterogeneous and Fenton-like catalysts with a wide pH range, high reusability, excellent activity and good stability.…”
