Photo-induced second-order nonlinear susceptibility in lead-silicate glasses and in planar waveguides on their basis

Abstract: Possibility of recording second-order nonlinear susceptibility in commercial specially synthesized lead-silicate glasses was investigated. It was be found effective photoinduced SHG in glasses with lead content from 10 to 40 mol%. Optical waveguides by ion-exchange were made in this glasses.

“…The basic activator for growth of the efficiency of photo-induced SHG signal in these media is the big content of lead oxides ∼40mol.% [7]. It was observed that the lead-containing glasses have the efficiency up to two orders of magnitude higher than the pure samples [8]. More big absolute efficiency of SHG ∼10 -5 has been observed in phosphate glass with containing 38 mol.% PbO 2 and 5,5 mol.% CeO 2 [7] (see sample SHG23 in Table 1).…”

“…More big absolute efficiency of SHG ∼10 -5 has been observed in phosphate glass with containing 38 mol.% PbO 2 and 5,5 mol.% CeO 2 [7] (see sample SHG23 in Table 1). There is an assumption, that the possible activators in glasses can be the rare-earth elements and some from groups of IV and V (Ge, Ti, P, N) [1,8]. Therefore we have decided to investigate influence on properties of the photo-induced signal of addition of activators from groups of IV and V (oxides of titanium and niobium) in effective samples from earlier investigated cerium-containing multi-lead phosphate glasses (see Table 1, samples SHG23, SHG26 and SHG31).…”
