Photo-initiated polymerization of cyclohexene oxide by dirhenium decacarbonyl

Abstract: Dirhenium decacarbonyl Re2(CO)10 initiate the polymerization of cyclohexene oxide photochemically at 25 °C. The effects of initiator concentration, photolysis time, light intensity, solvents and aromatic photosensitizers on the polymerization yield are presented. Molecular weights of the obtained polymers were characterized by viscosity. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry

“…These complexes have been used as spectroscopic probes in technologically important photosensitive thin fibers [9]. We have recently reported on the polymerization of cyclohexene oxide by dirhenium decacarbonyl [10]. In this paper, the polymerization of cyclohexene oxide photoinitiated by pentacarbonyl rhenium(I) halides, Re(CO) 5 X, without a cocatalyst at 25 • C and the thermal polymerization at 85 • C will be described.…”

“…Also, photolysis of Re2(CO)» at 25°C in the presence of ethylene, terminal olefins, or 2-butane results in the formation of (p,-hydrido )(p,alkenyl)dirhenium octacarbonyl complexes in high yield [ 17] . Recently, rhenium carbonyl compounds were used to catalyze the photopolymerization of cyclohexene oxide at 25°C without a co-catalyst [18].
