Photo-production of hydrogen over the CdS–TiO2 nano-composite particulate films treated with TiCl4

Because of their relatively high efficiency, high photostability, abundance, low cost, and nontoxic qualities, titania-based photocatalysts are still the most extensively studied materials for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from water. The effects of the chemical and physical properties of titania, including crystal phase, crystallinity, particle size, and surface area, on its photoactivity towards hydrogen generation have been identified by various investigations. The high overpotential for hydrogen generation, rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, rapid reverse reaction of molecular hydrogen and oxygen, and inability to absorb visible light are considered the most important factors that restrict the photoactivity of titania, and strategies to overcome these barriers have been developed. These issues and strategies are carefully reviewed and summarized in this Minireview. We aim to provide a critical, up-to-date overview of the development of titania-based photocatalysts for hydrogen production, as well as a comprehensive background source and guide for future research.

The photoelectrochemical properties of GaN particulate film electrode on Ti substrate were investigated. GaN particulate film electrode was fabricated by means of doctor blade technique. Two kinds of method were used to improve the connection between GaN particles. One is a heat treatment of GaN particulate thin film with LiNH 2 and another one is a heat treatment with TiCl 4 . From the results of the photoelectrochemical properties, GaN electrodes showed n-type semiconducting behavior in 1.0 M HCl electrolyte under UV irradiation. The high photocurrent response was achieved in the electrode with LiNH 2 treatment and TiCl 4 treatment because of its better connection of each GaN particle.

The NiO/SnO 2 nanocomposites have been prepared by the simple coprecipitation method and further characterized by the XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, and BET. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data analyses indicate the exclusive formation of nanosized particles with rutile-type phase (tetragonal SnO 2 ) for Ni contents below 10 mol%. Only above 10 mol% Ni, the formation of a second NiOrelated phase has been determined. The particle size is in the range from 12 to 6 nm. It decreases with increasing amounts of doping NiO. The morphology of NiO-doped SnO 2 nanocrystalline powders is spherical, and the distribution of particle size is uniform, as seen from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic oxidation of CO over NiO/SnO 2 photocatalyst has been investigated under UV irradiation. Effects of NiO loading on SnO 2 , photocatalyst loading, and reaction time on photocatalytic oxidation of CO have been systematically studied. Compared with pure SnO 2 , the 33.3 mol% NiO/SnO 2 composite exhibited approximately twentyfold enhancement of photocatalytic oxidation of CO. Our results provide a method for pollutants removal. Due to simple preparation, high photocatalytic oxidation of CO, and low cost, the NiO/SnO 2 photocatalyst will find wide application in the coming future of photocatalytic oxidation of CO.
