Photo simulation of a river restoration: Relationships between public perception and ecosystem services

Abstract: Evaluating the ecosystem services (ES) of rivers is a challenging process. We chose to evaluate photo simulations of a river restoration effort using two different approaches. The first approach was an expert evaluation based on the assessment of individual river restoration elements. The second was an evaluation of public perception, which was implemented by collecting 150 respondent replies through an internet questionnaire. Participants in both methods worked with the photo of the original site and three ad… Show more

“…Traditional water systems should be preserved, while new tools for their economic viability should be designed to establish acceptable compromises between water uses and riverine ecosystem requirements (Piégay, Cottet, & Lamouroux, 2020). Water quality and flood control monitoring techniques should also be introduced to ensure water security within settlements (Poledniková & Galia, 2020). At the same time, our research suggests that water is the spiritual core of Dong villages.…”

“…VR 360° panoramas provide a greater scene reduction and spatial experience than traditional photos, resolving the limitations of photos as evaluation tools (Bohil and Alicea et al, 2011). Due to the large scales and diverse types of rural landscapes, it is di cult to collect data, so the evaluation criteria of rural landscapes are always a di cult problem (Polednikova and Galia, 2021 Therefore, using computer vision technology to evaluate the visual perception of rural landscapes can make up for the limitations of on-site evaluations and photo evaluations, and it has a wide range of application prospects.…”
