Photoacoustic tomography of fingerprint and underlying vasculature for improved biometric identification

Abstract: Capitalizing on the photoacoustic effect, we developed a new fingerprint sensing system that can reveal both fingerprints and underlying vascular structures at a high spatial resolution. Our system is built on a 15 MHz linear transducer array, a research ultrasound system, and a 532-nm pulsed laser. A 3D image was obtained by scanning the linear array over the fingertip. The acquired fingerprint images strongly agreed with the images acquired from ultrasound. Additional experiments were also conducted to inves… Show more

“…117 Zheng et al already begun applying PA imaging to the biometric field, specifically in the context of liveness detection. 72 Using a human hair with known dimensions, the lateral and elevation resolutions were determined. However, relying solely on human hair for resolution assessment poses challenges due to the inconsistency in hair diameter, making repeatability by others difficult.…”

“…Linear-array transducers remain as one of the most popular choices due to easy integration with different light sources and compatibility with existing ultrasound systems [ 4 ]. Recently, linear transducer arrays have been used in breast imaging [ 5 ], biometrics [ 6 ], neural imaging [ 7 ], and oncology [ 8 ]. Linear arrays provide nearly isotropic resolution in the axial and lateral directions to form a B-mode image.…”

“…importance of biometric authentication in mobile devices has been increasing owing to its excellent security and convenience. [4][5][6] Mass-produced smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy, released in 2020, use optical fingerprint recognition on screen. 7,8 Financial transactions and shopping on smartphones require authentication technologies such as security numbers and fingerprints for the prevention of fingerprint spoofing and forgery.…”
