In this work, chitosan-TiO2 nanocomposites (NСs CS-TiO2) were developed for the photocatalytic degradation of some representatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by laser ablation method and their sizes were determined by dynamic laser light scattering (DLLS). Anthracene and pyrene in micellar solution were used as representatives of PAHs. The effect of TiO2 in the composition of prepared nanocomposites on the photodegradation of PAHs in model environments under UV irradiation was studied. The method of solid-phase luminescence (SPL) was used to estimate the decrease in PAHs concentrations. Based on the results of the studies carried out, pseudo-first order photodegradation kinetics were plotted. The efficiency of using the nanocomposites for the photocatalytic degradation of anthracene and pyrene was proved.

First study of phytosynthesis of TiO 2 NPs using the leaf (KL), pod (KP), seed (KS) and seed shell (KSS) extracts of kola nut tree ( Cola nitida ) is herein reported. The TiO 2 NPs were characterized and evaluated for their antimicrobial, dye degradation, antioxidant and anticoagulant activities. The nearly spherical-shaped particles had λmax of 272.5–275.0 nm with size range of 25.00–191.41 nm. FTIR analysis displayed prominent peaks at 3446.79, 1639.49 and 1382.96 cm −1 , indicating the involvement of phenolic compounds and proteins in the phytosynthesis of TiO 2 NPs. Both SAED and XRD showed bioformation of crystalline anatase TiO 2 NPs which inhibited multidrug-drug resistant bacteria and toxigenic fungi. The catalytic activities of the particles were profound, with degradation of malachite green by 83.48–86.28 % without exposure to UV-irradiation, scavenging of DPPH and H 2 O 2 by 51.19–60.08 %, and 78.45–99.23 % respectively. The particles as well prevented the coagulation of human blood. In addition to the antimicrobial and dye-degrading activities, we report for the first time the H 2 O 2 scavenging and anticoagulant activities of TiO 2 NPs, showing that the particles can be useful for catalytic and biomedical applications.

nanocomposite synthesized by the sol-gel method were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, EDAX and FTIR techniques. These nanoparticles were used for photocatalytic decolorisation and degradation of three different reactive dyes such as Reactive Orange 16 (RO 16), Reactive Yellow 145 (RY 145) and Reactive Red 195 (RR 195) and real textile composite wastewater under the UVA and UVA-LED irradiation at room temperature. The maximum color removal of 96% and COD removal of 72% were achieved after 5 h in the presence of TiO2/MWCNT and H2O2 under UVA-LED irradiation. The kinetic studies obey pseudo-first order kinetics which is discussed in terms of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model. The maximum degradation of 50% was achieved after 5 h in the presence of H2O2 using TiO2/MWCNT/UVA-LED for real textile composite wastewater. This study revealed that TiO2/MWCNT has improved the photocatalytic activity when compared to that of bare TiO2 under similar conditions. UVA-LED could be an alternative light source for the replacement of the conventional UV light for the photocatalytic treatment of reactive dyes.
