Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Antibacterial Activity of Mesoporous TiO2-SBA-15 Nanocomposite Based on Rice Husk

Abstract: Concerns have been increased regarding the existence of pollutants in environmental water resources and their risks to the ecosystem and human society. TiO2 photocatalyst is considered as an effective photocatalyst to remove the pollutants. Herein, the mesoporous TiO2-SBA-15 was prepared using the rice husk extract as the silica source. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized using FTIR, small and wide angle XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, BET surface area analysis, and HRTEM. The photocatalytic effi… Show more

“…On the basis of these mechanism, this unique structure of TiO 2 -RH composite exhibits an improved photocatalytic activity in visible light. Figure 6 B shows that the band-gap energy of TiO 2 -RH composite is lower than that of pure TiO 2 , which may be related to the combination of TiO 2 and rice husk in the composite system [ 25 , 28 ].…”

“…Considering this, it is relatively difficult to recover and reuse them, and the synthesis cost is high. Moreover, the complicated environment in water is easy to interfere with the surface properties of TiO 2 , which limits their applications in water treatment [ 25 ].…”

“…These results are in concordance with the fact that GO-TiO 2 showed a 15% absorption rate (Figure 2); thus, this absorption may be caused by the physical trapping of MC due to the higher surface area of the synthesized photocatalyst. Indeed, other authors have experienced higher MC absorption on their photocatalysts when the surface area was higher [18].…”

“…According to Ndindeng et al, there are 5 million tons of rice produced per year by sub-Saharan African countries, leading to high waste rice husks discharged into the environment [18]. Due to its low mechanical strength, low nutritional value and low bulk density, its use is limited [19]. However, rice husks contain a large amount of silica, approximately 98% of the total inorganic compounds [20], which can be used as raw material to produce value-added silicon-based materials with interesting texture and morphology.…”
