Photocatalytic Micropatterning of Transparent Ethylsilsesquioxane−Titania Hybrid Films

Abstract: Refractive index of ethylsilsesquioxane-titania hybrid films increased from 1.50 to 1.55 accompanied by a decrease in film thickness by about 30% after UV light irradiation. The contact angle for water of the films decreased from 95°to about 45°and the dynamic hardness increased with UV irradiation. These changes in physical and chemical properties of the films with UV irradiation were caused by the cleavage of silicon-carbon bonds and elimination of ethyl groups in the films due to the photocatalytic effect o… Show more

“…26), 27) Our research group have reported that silsesquioxane films are suitable to be used as matrices for optical-function films because they can be transparent thick films and easy to dope functional elements. 28) We also have recently reported a series of research on Ag-doped silsesquioxane films for rewritable hologram data storage application. 29)32) Ag-doped vinyl-silsesquioxane (ViSiO 3/2 )TiO 2 films have shown reversible absorbance change by alternate ultra-violet (UV) radiation and heat treatment.…”

“…The inorganicorganic hybrids prepared by the solgel method are promising host matrices to design such holographic materials. 6) In order to materialize promising holographic material, we have prepared Ag + ion-or AgBr nanoparticle-doped inorganicorganic hybrid films by the solgel method and evaluated their optical properties including the hologram formation ability. The mechanism of the hologram formation in the films is the generation of Ag nanoparticles at the region where strong light is irradiated.…”

“…22 This process is based on the irreversible structural changes in the films caused by the cleavage of Si-C bonds by the photocatalytic activity of the TiO 2 component during UV irradiation. In addition, these structural changes by the UV irradiation induce the changes of film properties, such as the refractive index, the contact angle for water and the hardness.…”
