Photoabsorption properties of titanium(IV) oxide powders were investigated by photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy. The photoacoustic spectra obtained under steady-state ultraviolet irradiation showed appearance and growth of two kinds of PA signal bands, which were attributable to trivalent titanium species (Ti 3+ ) and trapped holes or surface peroxide species. The saturation limit of the PA signal was estimated by analyzing the time course of Ti 3+ signals and compared to the density of Ti 3+ determined by a photochemical method. The results suggest that the photoacoustic spectroscopic technique is a feasible alternative method for estimation of Ti 3+ as an empirical measure of defect density. * Corresponding

The process of advanced oxidation by Fenton reaction (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) was studied in this work for decolorization of two synthetic effluents, containing the dyes Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RB).Experimentally, solutions at concentrations of 10 mg L -1 of the dyes were exposed to different concentrations of the oxidizing agent (H 2 O 2 ) and catalyst (Fe 2+ ) at a temperature of 27 °C and pH 3. The results showed high levels of color removal, with efficiency of 96% for MB and 86% RB.The data showed good adjustment to the kinetic model. The monitoring of the absorption spectrum of the dyes showed a reduction in amplitude of the peaks related to the chromophoric groups in both compounds, confirming the levels of efficiency achieved. The analysis of removal of organic matter in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) did not follow the same rate of decrease of decoloration, resulting in reductions of 40.9% for MB and 25.5% for the RB.

Traditional chemical, physical and biological processes for treating wastewater containing textile dye have such disadvantages as high cost, high energy requirement and generation of secondary pollution during treatment process. The advanced oxidation processes technology has been attracting growing attention for the decomposition of organic dyes. Such processes are based on the light-enhanced generation of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals, which oxidize the organic matter in solution and convert it completely into water, CO 2 and inorganic compounds. In this presentation, the photocatalytic degradation of dyes in aqueous solution using TiO 2 as photocatalyst under solar and UV irradiation has been reviewed. It is observed that the degradation of dyes depends on several parameters such as pH, catalyst concentration, substrate concentration and the presence of oxidants. Reaction temperature and the intensity of light also affect the degradation of dyes. Particle size, BETsurface area and different mineral forms of TiO 2 also have influence on the degradation rate.
