Photocatalytic Removal of Organic Pollutants from Industrial Wastewater Using TiO2 Catalyst

Abstract: Degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater was investigated by photocatalysis method using anatase modification of titanium-dioxide (TiO 2) catalyst with different structures. Laboratory experiments were carried out with industrial wastewaters consisting of different contents of organic pollutants. Two types of TiO 2 catalyst: TiO 2 having a size near to nanoparticles (about 3-4 micron in size) and the nanostructured 15 nm sized TiO 2 were used to find optimum conditions of photocatalytic degradation and … Show more

“…9 Therefore, it is crucial to develop efficient treatment methods for wastewater as once treated, it will be released into the natural environment. 10 Among the photoinduced AOPs, photocatalysis is the most popular. Over several decades, TiO 2 materials have garnered attention as semiconductor photocatalysts for environmental remediation.…”

“…[8][9][10][11][12] Nowadays, many kinds of photocatalysts have been found, mainly including semiconductor metal oxides and semiconductor metal suldes, such as TiO 2 , ZnO, CdS, ZnS, etc. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Among them, TiO 2 has attracted extensive attention because of its low cost, non-toxicity and good photocatalytic activity. [20][21][22][23][24] However, TiO 2 is not conducive to practical application due to the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron and hole pairs, the wide band gap (anatase phase TiO 2 $ 3.2 eV, rutile phase TiO 2 $ 3.0 eV), and the low utilization rate of solar light.…”

“…Wastewater mainly from industrial sources contain high number of organic pollutants that could pose numerous effects if being directly discharged to the environment with no authorization. Nowadays, industries prefer to replace the conventional microbial degradation process with heterogeneous photodegradation process which also known as an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) [1]. In photocatalytic system, they figured out that light from the light sources activates the catalyst at certain wavelength depend on the types of catalyst used.…”
