Photocatalytic solution discoloration and self-cleaning by polyester fabric functionalized with ZnO nanorods

Abstract: Polyester fabric was functionalized with ZnO nanorods grown by hydrothermal method. The ZnO seeds were deposited on fabric which provided the sites for growth of nanorods. The functionalized fabric showed self-cleaning by degrading color stains and solution discoloration under the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light which was studied using two azo and one triphenylemethylene dye. The stained fabric was exposed to UV light and K/S (K ¼ absorption coefficient, S ¼ scattering coefficient) values were measured by spe… Show more

“…ZnO-coated textile substrates have previously been used for the solar-driven photodegradation process of toxic organic compounds in water and air. To this end, ZnO-coated polyester [21,103,104,119] or cotton [12] substrates were immersed in different dye solutions, such as methylene blue, methyl orange, C.I. Acid Blue 9, C.I.…”

“…Regarding the reliability aspects, many authors have largely investigated the mechanical damage for superhydrophobic coatings in commercial maritime applications [17]. Excellent durability of nanorod-functionalized samples has been verified in a previous study through washing and abrasion tests [18].…”

“…For example, zinc oxide (ZnO) and TiO 2 have been known for UV protection, selfcleaning, and antibacterial activity for decades [3], but their usage in textiles was started after manufacturing them into nanostructure. Since then, they have been used to impart antibacterial activity [4], UV protection [5][6][7], self-cleaning [8][9][10], etc. Many organic compounds, which are eco-friendly, are being used to impart functionalities to textiles.…”
