Photochromism and Dual‐Color Fluorescence in a Polyoxometalate–Benzospiropyran Molecular Switch

Abstract: Abstract:The photophysical properties of a Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) covalently bounded to a benzospiropyran (BSPR) unit have been investigated. These studies reveal that (i) both closed and open forms are emissive with distinct spectral features (λem, (closed form) = 530 nm, λem, (open form) = 670 nm); (ii) the fluorescence of the BSPR unit of the POM-based hybrid is considerably enhanced compared to BSPR reference compounds. While the fluorescence excitation energy of the BSPR reference compounds (37… Show more

“…At present, the researches on photochromic materials mainly focus on Keggin-type heteropoly acids [11][12][13], especially phosphomolybdic acid and phosphotungstic acid. Scholars have used different preparation methods to compound heteropoly acids into different organic/inorganic Disclaimer/Publisher's Note: The statements, opinions, and data contained in all publications are solely those of the individual author(s) and contributor(s) and not of MDPI and/or the editor(s).…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Heteropolyoxotungstates (HPOTs) are a class of heteroatom (HA)-templated metal oxides and have been extensively applied in luminescence, catalysis, medicine, magnetism, materials science, etc. [10][11][12][13][14][15] Within HPOTs, HA species are wide ranging (from III to VI main groups such as B III , Si IV , Ge IV , P III/V , As III/V , Sb III , Bi III , Se IV and Te IV ), and the combination of diverse HA templates with tungstates leads to a large library of extraordinary HPOTs, [16][17][18][19][20] denoting a versatile subclass of the polyoxometalate (POM) family.…”

“…[1][2][3] Meanwhile, light stimulation can encode color, fluo rescence, morphology, force, or other dynamic properties in static materials. [4][5][6][7][8][9] A lot of photoresponsive units such as azobenzenes, [4,10] spiropyrans, [11,12] anthra cenes, [13,14] coumarins, [15,16] and diaryle thenes [17,18] have been explored. Most of these systems can exhibit only one photo reaction associated with a single signal, which greatly depends on the chemical structures and packing of molecules.…”
