Photodegradation of clothianidin under simulated California rice field conditions

Abstract: Photodegradation rates of clothianidin in flooded rice fields will be controlled by turbidity and light attenuation. Aqueous-phase photodegradation may reduce the risk of offsite transport of clothianidin from flooded rice fields (via drainage) and mitigate exposure to non-target organisms. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Fig 5C illustrates the possible photo-degradation pathway of clothianidin (C 6 H 8 N 3 OSCl as photo-degradation product), similar to that observed for imidacloprid, and different from results reported by Mulligan et al [60].…”

“…Formic acid (puriss p.a., ∼98%), deionized water (≤4.3 μS cm −1 ), methanol, acetone, and water were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. Synthesis of the degradation product N-(2-chloro-1,3-thiazol-5-ylmethyl)-N-methylurea (TZMU; ≥95.0% purity) was described in Mulligan et al 24 Synthesis of N-(2-Chlorothiazol-5-ylmethyl)-N′-nitroguanidine (TZNG). A homogeneous solution of 2-chlorothiazol-5-yl methanaminium chloride (1.92 g, 10.4 mmol), 100 mL of ethanol, and diisopropylethylamine (3.61 mL, 20.7 mmol) was prepared in a round-bottom flask equipped with a stir bar.…”

“…In 2014, rapid dissipations of clothianidin, similar to those of fipronil, were observed. Although the photodegradation half-lives of clothianidin (14.7-19.4 days) were lower than those of fipronil, 23) the concentrations of clothianidin rapidly decreased because it is highly degradable under flooded conditions and due to microbial activity. 24) In addition, the slower decrease phase was observed only in the volcanic ash soil plots.…”
