Photodynamic Therapy for Peri-Implant Diseases

Abstract: Peri-implant diseases are frequently presented in patients with dental implants. This category of inflammatory infections includes peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis that are primarily caused by the oral bacteria that colonize the implant and the supporting soft and hard tissues. Other factors also contribute to the pathogenesis of peri-implant diseases. Based on established microbial etiology, mechanical debridement has been the standard management approach for peri-implant diseases. To enhance the i… Show more

“…However, the clinical application of TBO is limited, mainly due to the aggregation-induced quenching problem [35]. Alternatively, the fluidic nature of photosensitizers makes retention periods a challenge, which may affect the desired therapeutic outcome [36]. Likewise, the concentration of photosensitizer used to destroy the complex structures of biofilms and yeasts should be higher due to the large size of the cell and the more complex cell structure [37].…”

“…Based on the above studies, aPDT can be used as an alternative to antibiotics and as adjunctive treatment of peri-implantitis. The combination of traditional mechanical treatment of peri-implantitis and aPDT reduces bacterial load and may be an alternative to antibiotics [ 57 , 58 ].…”

“…Hence, further well-designed studies with standardized parameters are required ( Albaker et al, 2018 ). Moreover, in a recent review of RCTs, aPDT decreases bacterial load associated with peri-implant diseases and may be considered an alternative to antibiotics ( Rahman et al, 2022 ).…”
