Photodynamic therapy in dermatology

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modern therapy modality, based upon the application of a photosensitizing agent like aminolevulinic acid, a physiological precursor of porphyrins, onto the tissue followed by illumination with light of the visible wavelength spectrum. During this oxygen-dependent reaction, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated that have immunomodulatory or cytotoxic effects. PDT shows excellent cosmetic results especially for its key indication in dermatology - the treatment of non-melanom… Show more

“…Eine klinisch etablierte Kombinationsbehandlung aus Laserlicht oder IPL und topisch applizierter Aminolävulinsäure (ALA) ist die photodynamische Therapie (PDT; [49,50,51]). Eine Indikation, die in den letzten Jahren klinisch und auch wissenschaftlich zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnt, ist die photodynamische Photorejuvenation, also der Einsatz der PDT zur Behandlung der Hautalterung.…”

“…A photosensitizer in the excited state causes photochemical reactions that lead to necrosis and apoptosis in pathological tissues. For many years PDT was used to detect and to treat different lesions located in the skin and mucosa [913]. Porphyrins are the most commonly used photosensitizers.…”

“…Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new method of tumor treatment which was developed in the 1980s. The principle of PDT is as follows: a photosensitizer can be selectively accumulated in the tumor, and then activated using a laser of specific wavelength, thus producing a singlet oxygen and oxygen radical, which can destroy the tumor tissues [3] . PDT has been mainly used to treat tumors on the body surface or inside the respiratory tract and digestive canal.…”
