Photodynamic Therapy in Primary Breast Cancer

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a technique for producing localized necrosis with light after prior administration of a photosensitizing agent. This study investigates the nature, safety, and efficacy of PDT for image-guided treatment of primary breast cancer. We performed a phase I/IIa dose escalation study in 12 female patients with a new diagnosis of invasive ductal breast cancer and scheduled to undergo mastectomy as a first treatment. The photosensitizer verteporfin (0.4 mg/kg) was administered intravenousl… Show more

“…Depending on the type of tumor, different PDT approaches have been successfully applied. Very recently, the first reported clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the performance of PDT in the treatment of primary breast cancer in humans [ 145 ]. In this trial, verteporfin was used as a photosensitizer at a concentration of 0.4 mg/Kg.…”

“…Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been employed in the clinic for treatment of a range of cancers ( e.g. skin, lung, bladder, head and neck, and very recently primary breast cancer [ 18 ] and non-oncological disorders ( e.g. antimicrobial PDT, age-related macular degeneration) [ 19 ].…”

“…Fifty patients were followed up for 8 months, with the photodynamic effect detected by PDT. The laser fiber inserted by percutaneous positioning needle can directly transmit light energy to the main body of the tumor, which has little impact on the skin and surrounding tissues (Banerjee et al, 2020). In the future, it may become a new possibility for the treatment of breast tumor that has no response to neoadjuvant therapy or slight response.…”
