Photoelectric current generation in a monolayer MoSe2–WS2 lateral heterojunction

Abstract: Based on density functional theory calculations and non-equilibrium Green's function method, we study the photovoltaic effect of monolayer MoSe2-WS2 lateral heterojunction under vertical irradiation. Combined with the differential charge density, it predicts the stability of the MoSe2-WS2 heterojunction and the high possibility of charge transfer from MoSe2 to WS2. As a result, such MoSe2-WS2 lateral heterojunction breaks the spatial inversion symmetry thus leading to a photocurrent. The resultant photocurrent… Show more

“…Single atomic thickness graphene peeled from bulk graphite was first reported in 2004, opening up a new era in twodimensional (2D) materials [4]. To date, hundreds of 2D materials with emerging characteristics have been discovered [5][6][7][8][9], in which the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) [10][11][12][13] family has attracted considerable attention due to its extraordinary electrical and optical properties. Typically, TMDC is constructed of a sandwich structure, where a plane of metal atoms is sandwiched between two planes of chalcogen atoms by a covalent bond.…”

“…Topological materials can be classified as either gapped or gapless based on their energy band spectra in momentum space [1][2][3][4][5]. The former hosts many exotic phenomena ranging from topological insulators [6,7], integer quantum Hall insulators [8][9][10], and topological superconductors [11,12] to higher-order topological insulators [13,14].…”

“…Recently, photogalvanic effects (PGEs) in two-dimensional (2D) systems have been found as a good method to solve these problems and have received extensive attentions [5][6][7][8][9]. Experimentally, the PGEs in the bulk materials have been found, such as in the SrTiO 3 , TiO 2 and organometal halide perovskite CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 , respectively [10,11].…”
