Herein we report on the effect of varied spin-coated seed layer concentrations of Iron (III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3.6H2O) on the photoelectrochemical performance of hydrothermally synthesized hematite nanorods. The seed layers were prepared from 0.05, 0.07, 0.09, 0.11, and 0.13 M concentrations of FeCl3.6H2O. The nanorods were vertically aligned with slight inclinations over the seed layers with the two lowest molar concentrations (0.05 and 0.07 M) of FeCl3.6H2O. A further increase in seed layer concentrations transformed the nanorods as they grew over others and agglomerated into clusters. Structural analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated uniform hematite crystalline peaks for all the samples. All samples absorbed highly in the visible region within an onset absorption edge wavelength ranging from 624 to 675 nm. Overall, the nanorods synthesized over the lowest seed layer concentration of 0.05 M of FeCl3.6H2O exhibited the highest photocurrent density of 0.077 mA/cm2 at 1.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. The results obtained provide important information about the structural, optical, and photoelectrochemical properties of hematite nanorods synthesized over varied seed layer concentrations. This is a key contribution in understanding and enhancing the hematite nanorods performance for photocatalytic applications.

The surface properties of semiconductors have a significant influence on their photoelectrocatalytic efficiency. This research presents a precursor aging method for tuning the surface properties of CuO films, for enhanced catalytic response. A precursor solution made using copper acetate, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, and diethanolamine, and aged for 1, 40, 80, 120, 150, 180, and 250 days is used in each case to fabricate CuO photocathodes via the dip‐coating method. The films fabricated using the 1‐day‐old precursor reveal compact and homogeneous nanoparticles. The films eventually get tuned to yield highly porous and rougher surfaces after aging the precursors for 180–250 days. The film's bandgap decreases by 9% after 180–250 days of precursor aging. Photocathodes prepared using the 180‐day‐old precursor produce the optimum photocurrent density of 1.6 mA cm−2 at 0.35 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), representing a 196% increase relative to the films fabricated using the 1‐day‐old solution. They also produce an anodic onset potential shift of 260 mV. This improved photoelectrocatalytic response is due to the porous morphology of the films, which produces a larger surface area that enhances light absorption, increases active sites for catalytic reactions, and reduces charge transfer resistance at the photocathode‐electrolyte interface.

A photoelectrochemical investigation of photoanodes based on hematite nanorods and nanospheres fabricated via hydrothermal technique is reported. The fabricated nanostructures have been thoroughly analyzed and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, UV-Visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The presence of oxygen vacancies and morphological characteristics of Hematite photoanodes were shown to be directly related to their photoelectrochemical performances. The nanorod-based photoanode yields an excellent photocurrent density of 1.63 mAcm2 which was about four times greater than the nanosphere-based photoanode. Furthermore, hematite nanorods showed efficient charge transfer kinetics, increased donor density and, excellent photo stability. The enhancement in photoelectrochemical properties of nanorods can be attributed to the oxygen vacancies generated in hematite nanorods which provide excellent electrical conductivity and better charge transfer kinetics. The results demonstrate that oxygen vacancy-rich nanorods can serve as ideal photoelectrode for enhancing the electrochemical properties of hematite nanostructures.
