Photoexcited Singlet and Triplet States of a UV Absorber Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene

Abstract: The excited states of UV absorber, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene (EHMCR) have been studied through measurements of UV absorption, fluorescence, phosphorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra in ethanol. The energy levels of the lowest excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states of EHMCR were determined. The energy levels of the S1 and T1 states of EHMCR are much lower than those of photolabile 4-tert-butyl-4'-methoxydibenzoylmethane. The energy levels of the S1 and T1 states of EHMCR are lower … Show more

“…In a mixture, such long-lived states could be reactive. Indeed, it is well known that some sunscreen blends incorporate the use of photostabilizers [165,166] to counter this. It is, therefore, crucial to explore these types of interactions.…”

“…However, OCR has been reported to be nonfluorescent [37]. In the previous study, the energy level of the S 1 state of OCR was estimated to be 29,000 cm À 1 from the longer wavelength edge of the UV absorption spectrum [38]. The observed energy levels of the S 1 states are shown in Scheme 1.…”

“…The ideal UV absorbers should ensure that the absorbed UV energy is transformed into vibrational energy without harmful reactions. Therefore, the nature of the photoexcited states of UV absorbers and their deactivation processes have been under active investigation (5)(6)(7)(8)(9).…”
