Photoinduced Charge Separation Involving an Unusual Double Electron Transfer Mechanism in a Donor−Bridge−Acceptor Molecule

Abstract: A series of rodlike donor−bridge−acceptor (D−B−A) molecules was synthesized to study the role of bridge energy levels on electron transfer (ET) rates. In these compounds, a 4-aminonaphthalene-1,8-imide (ANI) electron donor is linked to a 1,8:4,5-naphthalenediimide acceptor (NI) via the 1,4 positions on a phenyl bridge. The phenyl bridge is substituted at the 2 and 5 positions with methyl or methoxy groups to yield ANI-diMe-NI and ANI-diMeO-NI. These molecules differ only in the energy levels of the bridge mole… Show more

“…-Secondly, brought together, observations concerning 1-bpy and 1-phen indicate that, as far as -interaction is concerned, which has by far the largest contribution to intramolecular electronic communication, geometrical decoupling is rather efficient to produce electronic decoupling, including within closely coupled and compact assemblies. This issue is in line with literature reports concerning other less compact assemblies [1,111,114,115,117,147,[153][154][155][156][157][158][159].…”

“…The same issues obviously hold for excited-state photoinduced planarization. With the angular dependence of electronic coupling [111,114,115,117,147,[153][154][155][156][157][158][159] in mind, it follows that torsional fluctuations of larger amplitude are therefore correlated with a greater intramolecular electronic [143]. Room-temperature photophysical features (recorded in MeCN deaerated solution) of selected Os-based compounds [115a].…”

“…Derivatives of 1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimides (NDIs) are known for such air-stable conductivity. 13 Due to this, NDIs have been used in the study of electron-transfer processes, [14][15][16][17][18] as liquid crystalline and photorefractive materials, [19][20][21] as photosynthetic model compounds, 22 and for opto-electronic applications. 23 Electrochemical and photophysical properties of NDI have been explored previously by several groups.…”

“…A similar concerted mechanism was observed for the ultrafast transfer of both an electron and hole from the charge-transfer-type excited state of a molecular chromophore, 4-aminonaphthalene-1,8-imide, to separate covalently linked redox partners. [5] The excited state of this chromophore, which has ~70% charge transfer character, is an organic analog of the exciton in a colloidal QD.…”
