Many reasons have caused a worldwide water stress problem. Thus, the recycling of wastewater streams has been extensively studied. In this work, eco-friendly mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated, characterized, and tested for the removal of two separate dyes from simulated waste streams. The environmentally friendly nano activated carbon (NAC) was extracted from water hyacinth to be impregnated as a membrane nano-filler to enhance the neat membrane performance. The extracted NAC was further studied and characterized. Cellulose acetate (CA)-based membranes were obtained by phase inversion and electrospinning mechanisms. All four synthesized blank and MMMs were characterized via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and contact angle to study their structure and hydrophilic nature, respectively. However, the membrane with optimum performance was further characterized using Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The four prepared cast and electro-spun, blank, and mixed matrix CA-based membranes showed an acceptable performance in the removal and selectivity of methylene blue (MB) dye over Congo red (CR) dye with a removal percentage ranging from 31 to 70% depending on the membrane used. It was found that the CA/NAC hybrid nanofiber membrane possessed the highest removal efficiency for MB, where the dye concentration declined from 10 to 2.92 mg/L. In contrast, the cast blank CA membrane showed the least removal percentage among the synthesized membranes with only 30% removal. As a result, this paper suggests the use of the CA/NAC hybrid membrane as an alternative and cost-effective solution for MB dye removal.

This study presents an efficient way to degrade methylene blue (MB) present in water via photodegradation using H2O2 as an oxidant in the presence of UV irradiation and without the use of a catalyst. The reaction variables, employed to evaluate the performance of the photodegradation process using the UV/H2O2 system, were the amount of H2O2 in the reacting solution and the initial concentration of methylene blue. The degradation of methylene blue in the presence of H2O2 was not observed during agitation in darkness. The degradation time decreased as the H2O2 concentration increased after the ideal concentration was reached. At this stage, as it began to scavenge the generated hydroxyl radicals, the rate of degradation became inversely proportional to the concentration of H2O2. An increase in the quantities of MB and H2O2 improved the degradation efficiency because the oxidation process was aided by using the appropriate amount of H2O2 and an ideal length of UV light exposure. The experimental data obtained were well-fitted to zero-order reaction kinetics based on the high values of the correlation coefficient. It is believed that the OH radicals (OH●) generated during the breakdown of H2O2 and the generated O2●− species attack the MB molecules and produce MB radicals (MB●). These MB radicals further experience oxidation and convert to intermediates and finally to CO2 and H2O. The UV/H2O2 system proved to be quite efficient for the photodegradation of methylene blue without the use of any solid catalyst. This UV/H2O2 system can be employed in the degradation of other organic pollutants in industrial wastewater.

In this study, we developed highly efficient nonwoven membranes by modifying the surface of polypropylene (PP) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) through photo-grafting polymerization. The nonwoven membrane surfaces of PP and PBT were grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of benzophenone (BP) and metal salt. We immobilized tertiary amine groups as BP synergists on commercial nonwoven membranes to improve PP and PBT surfaces. In situ Ag, Au, and Au/Ag nanoparticle formation enhances the nonwoven membrane surface. SEM, FTIR, and EDX were used to analyze the surface. We evaluated modified nonwoven membranes for photocatalytic activity by degrading methylene blue (MB) under LED and sunlight. Additionally, we also tested modified membranes for antibacterial activity against E. coli. The results indicated that the modified membranes exhibited superior efficiency in removing MB from water. The PBT showed the highest efficiency in dye removal, and bimetallic nanoparticles were more effective than monometallic. Modified membranes exposed to sunlight had higher efficiency than those exposed to LED light, with the PBT/Au/Ag membrane showing the highest dye removal at 97% within 90 min. The modified membranes showed reuse potential, with dye removal efficiency decreasing from 97% in the first cycle to 85% in the fifth cycle.
