Photometric and morphological analysis of UCM galaxies. II. Statistical results and interpretation

Abstract: A b s tra c t. -We present the results of Thuan & Gunn r CCD imaging observations of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) sample of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) selected by the presence of Ha emission in low resolution objective-prism spectra. In this work, a total of 212 objects from the UCM survey have been photometrically and morphologically characterized. In a previous paper, the observations, basic reductions and morphological classification for the UCM objects were presented. Here, we analyse the… Show more

“…All of the above values are very similar to those found by Vitores et al (1996b) and place the UCM sample of galaxies in the zone of the late-type spirals, with small bulges and not very extended disks (Freeman 1970). Three remarks are interesting when comparing both sets of data.…”

“…Therefore, despite there is a great variety in morphological and spectroscopic types, a uniformity in the mean surface brightness is exhibited, as was also proved with the red data (Vitores et al 1996b found a slope value of −0.21±0.01). The fit gives a mean surface brightness value of −13.3 mag kpc −2 .…”

“…A detailed comparison to the results of other photometric studies of dwarf and/or emission line galaxies like e.g. Salzer et al (1989), Telles et al (1997), Vader & Chaboyer (1994), Vitores et al (1996), Cruzen et al (1997) will be postponed to a main journal paper. …”
