Photon counting compressive depth mapping

Abstract: We demonstrate a compressed sensing, photon counting lidar system based on the single-pixel camera. Our technique recovers both depth and intensity maps from a single under-sampled set of incoherent, linear projections of a scene of interest at ultra-low light levels around 0.5 picowatts. Only two-dimensional reconstructions are required to image a three-dimensional scene. We demonstrate intensity imaging and depth mapping at 256 × 256 pixel transverse resolution with acquisition times as short as 3 seconds. W… Show more

“…As shown in previous work, the solver Gradient Projection for Sparse Reconstruction (GPSR) can be used as a least-squares fitting tool on the largest components of the signal returned by TVAL3 in a Haar wavelet basis [32,33]. A mask was obtained in the pixel basis by neglecting all values less than 4% of the maximum intensity from TVAL3 while least-squares was performed in the wavelet basis with GPSR.…”

“…However, with a large aperture LED and fast electronics, a LED SPCM could be used for multimode detection with good timing resolution (Howland, Lum, Ware, & Howell, 2013), shot noise limited power measurements or simply as an experimental tool for statistical analysis (Soares, Mendonca, & Ramos, 2014).…”

“…In recent years, single-pixel imaging system [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] has been paid more and more attention and has been successfully applied in many fields, such as threedimensional imaging [6][7][8][9], optical security [10] and so on [11]. Single-pixel imaging system needs to modulate the illumination light intensity, and the reflected light is detected by single-pixel no-scanning detector.…”

“…Photon counting single-pixel lidar is built by the [8] and applied to obtain three-dimensional image and video at 14 frames per second. A background subtraction method [8,9] for object tracking at low light levels is proposed. From the numbers of the object tracking images, we can get the trajectory of moving object.…”
