Photonic Crystal Chemical/Biochemical Sensors

Abstract: In this chapter, the definitions of the photonic crystals (PhCs) are presented and the photonic crystal-based sensors are described. The structures of some photonic crystal biosensors that can detect chemical or biochemical molecules are also investigated. Sensing mechanism in the most photonic crystal sensors is based on the refractive index (RI) change mechanism. By binding the chemical or biochemical molecules to active sensing surface, the refractive index will be changed. So, the resonant wavelength or th… Show more

“…Some of common defect types for PC lattices are listed here [36,37]: a) Hm-type: By removing m points to create a small space in the lattice. H0-cavity is created by just modifying the radius of some holes or rods without removing any point [38][39][40]. Figure 1 (a) shows this kind of cavity.…”

“…small size and shape as well as the strong confinement of light at the heart of the device which gives them a well-defined and precise detection platform, photonic crystals are the best answer to this field [39]. Furthermore, other sensors based on photonic crystals (PhCs) or based on circular rings based on PhC called (PhCRR) have been used for biodetection applications [40], temperature sensors [41], detection of cancer [42], chemical sensors [43], etc.…”
