Photonic Generation of Triangular-Shaped Waveform With Tunable Symmetry Factor Based on Two Single-Drive Mach-Zehnder Modulator

Abstract: An approach to generating triangular-shaped waveform with variable symmetry based on two single-drive Mach-Zehnder Modulator is proposed and analyzed. By setting the bias state of modulators, the rotation angle of polarization controller, phase shift of phase shifters and the modulation index of modulators properly, triangular-shaped waveforms with different symmetry can be synthesized in time-domain. The detailed theoretical analysis and simulation are given. Triangular-shaped waveforms with different symmetr… Show more

“… 13 The most commonly used method at present is external modulation 14 19 Because external modulation allows signal generation within a lower radio frequency range and enables modulation of frequency, phase, and amplitude through an external modulator, it is possible to generate various waveforms using external modulation. Reference 13 using a spectrum shaper and performing frequency-to-time mapping through dispersive optical fibers results in the generation of periodic triangular pulses.…”

“…This scheme generates versatile waveforms including short pulse, trapezoidal, triangular, and sawtooth waveforms but still focuses on the generation of symmetric waveforms and cannot achieve the generation of asymmetric waveforms. Reference 18 directly utilizes an RF signal to drive an SD-MZM to obtain a tunable symmetric triangular waveform. The scheme includes only one SD-MZM.…”

“…Normally, extra techniques are required to manipulate the phase and power weights of each harmonic. The proposed asymmetric triangular-shaped waveform generation schemes include the method based on a push-pull MZM with a tunable ODL [14], the scheme using parallel MZM arrays with four tunable phase shifters (PS) [15], the scheme based on parallel MZMs working on different polarization states [16], and the scheme using an integrated I/Q (I: in-phase, Q: quadrature phase) modulator with a tunable PS [17]. All above schemes claimed that the symmetry-tunable full-duty triangular-shaped waveforms can be generated by the modulator arrays with the help of the tunable ODL, polarization controlling or the tunable RF PS.…”
