“…Moreover, ZnPc undergoes aggregation in water, due to π-stacking interactions, reducing its photobiological activity (Soares et al, 2011;Conte et al, 2014). To overcome the drawbacks related to its poor solubility in aqueous medium and aggregation, ZnPc and its derivatives have been encapsulated in nanostructured systems like liposomes (Derycke and de Witte, 2004;Rodal et al, 1998;Paszko et al, 2011), cyclodextrins (Conte et al, 2014), polymeric micelles (Sibata et al, 2004), micelles (Romero et al, 2013) or polymeric nanocapsules (Ricci-Júnior and Marchetti, 2006a,b;Fadel et al, 2010;Soares et al, 2011). Photosensitizers loaded in nanostructured systems show additional advantages: (i) possibility of reaching specific sites of actions; (ii) enhancement of cellular and tissue uptake; (iii) permeability; (iv) selective accumulation within diseased cells and tissues and (v) control the drug release (Konan et al, 2002;Medina et al, 2011).…”
