Photoreactions of cyclic sulfite esters: Evidence for diradical intermediates

Abstract: SummaryThe photochemistry of a phenyl and 1,2-diphenyl substituted sulfite ester is reported. The performance of photoreactions under relatively mild reaction conditions enables the detection of products that have not been observed in previous studies. It is concluded that, complementary to the initially proposed carbene intermediates, diradicals may also be considered.

“…[229] A ferrocene-containing bis(triazolium)-based macrocyclic system was also shown to recognize chloride and benzoate anions. [230] A ferrocene-based imidazophenanthroline dyad chemosensor designed by Tarraga's and Molina's group effectively recognized aqueous hydrogenpyrophosphate and the organic anions ADP and ATP through three different channels, provoking cathodic shifts of the ferrocene CV wave ranging from -130 mV for hydrogenpyrophosphate and fluoride to -40 mV for ADP. [231] Ferrocene-based ureas have also been used as receptors of H 2 PO 4 and fluoride anions.…”

“…The observation that the photoreaction of the sulfite esters in methanol gave ethers 7 , 11 , 12 , 13 as the major products shows the ionic intermediates of the photochemical reaction of sulfite esters (Scheme ). In the case of 9 , in addition to 12 , the photolysate also includes 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , which was also observed in acetonitrile .…”

“…In an earlier manuscript on the photochemistry of cyclic sulfite esters, we reported that although both hydrogen and aryl groups migrate, oxirane formation is not observed [4].…”

“…Previous studies involving the extrusion of SO from sulfoxides have proposed both triplet radical, [23] and singlet homolytic [24] cleavage mechanisms. While no cross-products are formed when 2 Me 2 is irradiated in the presence of 2 this does not allow for the unambiguous distinction between radical and homolytic cleavage of the carbonÀsulfur bond.…”
