Photosensitized and photocatalyzed degradation of azo dye using Lnn+-TiO2 sol in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation

Abstract: With attempts to improve the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) catalysts and also extend the light absorption toward the visible light region, three types of the lanthanide ion-modified titanium dioxide (Ln Keywords:Hydrosol; Lanthanide ion; Photocatalysis; Photocurrent; Photosensitization This is the Pre-Published Version.2

“…Os elementos da série dos lantanídeos apresentam facilidade para a complexação com bases de Lewis [56][57][58] . Desta forma, a dopagem de fotocatalisadores com o cério aumenta a capacidade de adsorção dos poluentes, (tais como ácidos orgânicos, aldeídos, aminas e álcoois) sobre a superfície do fotocatalisador, o que pode favorecer o processo de fotodegradação dos poluentes 57,58 .…”

“…Aqueous TiO 2 hydrosol prepared at low temperature (< 100 °C) has several advantages of: (1) finer particle size with more uniform distribution and better dispersion in water; (2) stronger interfacial adsorption ability; and (3) easy coating on various supporting materials [12]. Some researchers used aqueous peroxotitanium acid gel derived from titanium metal [13] or compounds [14] to synthesize peroxo-modified anatase sol under autoclave conditions [15][16][17].…”

“…Various synthetic routes like sol-gel method, 24 hydrothermal method, 25 coprecipitation-peptization methods 26 have been studied for hetero-atom doped TiO 2 nanocrystallites. Among these methods, the sol-gel process leads to the greatest possible homogeneous distribution of the dopant in the host matrix and high surface area TiO 2 particles.…”

“…13 The sol-gel process involves the low temperature synthesis of an inorganic network by a chemical reaction in solution, generally the hydrolysis and subsequent peptization of metallic alkoxides. 26 Many variables can influence the quality of the final product, for example, the choice of the solvent, use of acid or base catalysis, and use of stabilizing agents. One of the many advantages of the sol-gel process is the possibility of forming well-controlled mixed oxides, by a judicious choice of the used precursors.…”
