Photosensitizers for antibacterial photodynamic therapy based on tetracationic derivatives of synthetic bacteriochlorins

Abstract: Antibacterial photodynamic therapy is a promising method of treating local infected foci, in particular, surgical and burn wounds, trophic and diabetic ulcers. Both Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa are found in most infected wounds. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is able to effectively destroy bacterial cells without developing resistance in response to treatment. This work is dedicated to the study of photophysical and antibacterial properties of … Show more

“…Cationic PS (porphyrins and their analogues), such as chlorins, bacteriochlorins, corollas, phthalocyanines, as well as dyes of various nature (in particular, methylene blue (MB)) are investigated for their application in aPDT [7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…PDI effectiveness of bacteria depends on PS molecular properties-their molecule size and mass, number of cationic groups and their configuration, and photodynamic properties, in particular, quantum yield of singlet oxygen [10]. PDI effectiveness also depends on the process of photodegradation of PS due to the photobleaching phenomenon during irradiation.…”
