Photosynthesis and Leaf Water, Carbohydrate, and Hormone Status during Rooting of Stem Cuttings of Acer rubrum

Abstract: Leaf water status, carbohydrate levels, net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, ABA, dihydrozeatin riboside (DHZR), and trans-zeatin riboside (ZR) levels were determined in a greenhouse during rooting of stem cuttings of Acer rubrum L. `Red Sunset' taken on 3 Sept. 1987 and 28 May 1988. Leaf water status deteriorated before rooting and improved after root emergence. Leaf carbohydrate concentrations (glucose, sucrose, total soluble sugars, and tota… Show more

“…The large increase in g s of the expanding leaves (L3) on cuttings of C. maxima is unusual as most published reports show a decrease in g s following severance (Gay and Loach 1977, Smalley et al 1991, Newton and Jones 1993, Hoad and Leakey 1996). Usually, g s remains low until the cutting has rooted (Smalley et al 1991, Svenson 1995). In the present study, ψ leaf was maintained above −0.5 MPa in cuttings, even in the absence of adventitious roots.…”

“…The differences may be due to the stress (VPDair) under which the studies were conducted. It is not clear whether the increased capacity for photosynthetic gas exchange in cuttings is driven by improved water relations or some other signal (i.e., hormonal-Hubick et al, 1988;Smalley et al, 1991;source/sink-Feldmann et al, 1989;Loach and Gay, 1979).…”
