Photosynthetic activity of young Ricinus communis L. plants under conditions of flooded soil

Abstract: Soil flooding is a stress condition that causes changes in hydric relationships and in the metabolism of crops, thereby affecting their productivity. To evaluate the effects of soil flooding on the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient, as well as gas exchange and Ricinus communis growth, young plants of the ‘AL Guarany 2002’ and ‘IAC Guarani’ cultivars, grown in a greenhouse, were subjected to flood conditions by maintaining a layer of water 2-3 cm above the soil. The stressed plants showed drastic reduction i… Show more

“…Trees in tropical areas with seasonal floods have a similar response (Rengifo et al, 2005), with a reduction in photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance, but an accumulation of starch in leaves. The accumulation of starch and sugars in leaves compromises photosynthetic efficiency due to feedback-inhibition (Kreuzwieser et al, 2004;Dalberto et al, 2017).…”

“…Thus, if NSSI has the potential to alleviate distress and can be accomplished easily with available resources, NSSI may be selected over alternative strategies computed as more costly or less likely to produce comparable benefits. Critically, this computation depends on the individuals' prior and current affect: an individual who is perpetually in extreme distress is further from allostasis and capable of experiencing much greater relief than one who is only briefly or mildly distressed, such that the value of the relief is greater for the first individual than the second (Leknes & Tracey, 2008).…”
