Photosynthetic metabolism and antioxidant in Ormosia arborea are modulated by abscisic acid under water deficit?

Abstract: The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of abscisic acid (ABA) on gas exchange and the activity of antioxidant enzymes of Ormosia arborea (Vell.) Harms seedlings under water deficit and its influence on the recovery potential of the seedlings. The experiment was conducted using four treatments, being daily irrigation or water restriction without and with 10 μM ABA. Seedlings under water deficit + ABA showed greater adjustment to drought, and when re-irrigated, they restored photosynthetic metabolis… Show more

“…The relationship between total chlorophyll content and low soil water availability is a complex variable, as it depends on the phenotypic plasticity of the plant to tolerate the low availability of water in the substrate. However, water deficit generally leads to low chlorophyll content (Freitas et al, 2020;Bastos et al, 2021). Thus, this relationship may be reversible through physiological mechanisms that prevent or minimize the degradation of these photosynthetic pigments, such as shading.…”

“…Plant species with greater phenotypic plasticity exhibit changes in morphology and response to the environment, enabling them to adapt to new conditions to maximize resource acquisition (Esperon-Rodriguez et al, 2020). The greater the degree of plasticity, the greater the ability to acclimate and survive in unfavorable environmental conditions (Barbosa et al, 2021;Bastos et al, 2021;Santos et al, 2023).…”

“…The complex anatomy of plant leaves played a key role in plant growth and development, which related to the response of the water deficit (Barbour and Farquhar 2004 ). Detection of leaf water potential was one of the best method to measure plant water deficit, that was usually used to guide the amount of irrigation water in planting (Bastos et al 2022 ). Although there were many methods of measuring the leaf water potential, it remained to be determined which method will be most accurate in the context of RDI (Atherton et al 2012 ; Cheng et al 2011 ; Higa et al 2013 ; Sperry et al 1996 ; Ullah et al 2013 ; Yi et al 2013 ; Zhang et al 2012 ).…”

“…Ormosia arborea (Vell.) Harms (Fabaceae: Papilionoideae) is a species native to the Atlantic forest and the Cerrado, it can grow in riparian environments or in well-drained soil, and its introduction into plantations for recovery of degraded areas is recommended to stimulate recovery (Junglos et al 2018;Bastos et al 2022). The physical dormancy of its seeds, which is caused by seed coat impermeability, can be overcome by chemical scarification with sulfuric acid for 15 minutes (Silva et al 2014).…”
