Photosynthetic Performance of the Imidazolinone Resistant Sunflower Exposed to Single and Combined Treatment by the Herbicide Imazamox and an Amino Acid Extract

Abstract: The herbicide imazamox may provoke temporary yellowing and growth retardation in IMI-R sunflower hybrids, more often under stressful environmental conditions. Although, photosynthetic processes are not the primary sites of imazamox action, they might be influenced; therefore, more information about the photosynthetic performance of the herbicide-treated plants could be valuable for a further improvement of the Clearfield technology. Plant biostimulants have been shown to ameliorate damages caused by different … Show more

“…There has been a number of publications describing the positive impact of biostimulants on the growth and development of crop plants (KHAN et al, 2011a;KHAN et al, 2011b;MATYSIAK et al, 2012;JANNIN et al, 2013;LASKOWSKA et al, 2013;GUGAŁA et al, 2017). According to some of the authors, these substances not only increase the yielding but also neutralize the adverse impact of weather conditions and plant protection chemicals and reduce the occurrence of diseases in crop plants (MACIEJEWSKI et al, 2007;-SAWICKA & KROCHMAL-MARCZAK, 2009BALABANOVA et al, 2016CONSTANTIN et al, 2016). Depending on the composition of the mixture and the year of the field experiments, the tested substances and their mixtures had varied effects on the yield of spring wheat.…”

“…Chlorophyll a fluorescence kinetics studies using portable devices known as fluorometers or Plant Stress Meters (PSM) is one of the finest methods to investigate the function of PSII and its reactions to changes in the environment and plant growth conditions (Kalaji et al 2011). In recent years, changes in ChlF patterns in response to several stress factors has been reported, such as, drought (Berger et al 2010;Živčák et al 2014;de Sousa et al 2017), low or high light (Bartak et al 2004;Kalaji et al 2012;Hazrati et al 2016), salinity (Zhang et al 2010;Kalaji et al 2011), temperature (Kalaji et al 2011;Brestič et al 2012;Botta 2013;Huang et al 2017) and herbicides (Balabanova et al 2016). Nevertheless, photosynthetic performances of different maize lines by exploiting multi-parametric fluorescence devices under inoculation with F. verticillioides have not yet been explored at all.…”

“…H2O2 generated by hydroxyl radicals resulted in lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage (Dat et al, 2000). Subsequently, thylakoid membrane electron leakage and oxidative damage of thylakoid phospholipid membrane of the chloroplasts interrupt the electron transport side chain from PSII to PSI and this interruption of the Z scheme will change the shape of the Kautsky curves (Dayan and Zaccaro, 2012;Balabanova et al, 2016).…”

“…The polyphasic Kautsky transient curve was measured to evaluate the effects of herbicides on the photochemical efficiency of PSII (Juneau et al, 2007;Balabanova et al, 2016). Desmedipham, phenmedipham and chloridazon as photosystem II (PSII) inhibitors cause the blocking of electron transfer between the primary and secondary quinones (QA and QB) of PSII by binding to the QB-binding site and accepting electrons from QA in the chloroplasts (Strasser and Govindjee, 1992;Hess, 2000;Zhang et al, 2014).…”
