Photosynthetic productivity of conical helical tubular photobioreactors incorporating Chlorella sp. under various culture medium flow conditions

Abstract: The characteristics of the flow of culture medium significantly affects the photosynthetic productivity of bioreactors incorporating microalgae. Therefore, in order to optimize the performance of a conical helical tubular photobioreactor (CHTP) designed to be useful in practical applications, we characterized the flow pattern of the culture medium through the reactor. The effects of medium flow conditions on the photosynthetic productivity of Chlorella sp. were investigated using several different CHTP units w… Show more

“…The single tubes can be straight, they can follow a meandering course either flat on the ground or ordered in panels or coils (so called helical reactor [42][43][44] [8] and B) dome reactor after Sato [36], a large installation (hectars) has been build up at BioReal (Maui, USA).…”

“…An artificial light sometime replaces natural light to enhance microalgae growth. However, the use of artificial light adds to the investment costs, leading to the helical-tubular photobioreactors only being adequate for the manufacture of high-value added products (Morita et al, 2001;Briassoulisa et al, 2010).…”

“…Research on algal production rates for biofuels and commercial products has lead to a plethora of work on open bioreactors, such as ponds and raceway flumes [4,, and closed bioreactors, such as vertical , horizontal [34,40, and helical tubes [97,[143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153][154], flat plates [66,, and other unique designs [133,[185][186][187][188][189]. This research dates back to the early 1950s and was chronicled in a historical perspective by Borowitzka [190].…”
