Phylogenetic analyses and cross‐infection studies of Phytophthora species infecting cacao and durian in South‐Central Mindanao, Philippines

Abstract: Cacao and durian are high-valued crops grown in the Philippines and in some parts of the world, which can potentially increase income and sustainability among farmers. Most of the production areas of these crops are established in the southern part of the Philippines in Mindanao, in which Cacao and durian are commonly planted as intercrop with other plantation crops. “…Phytophthora palmivora isolates from durian were found to be moderately pathogenic to papaya [235]. In addition, isolates from cocoa could infect durian, rubber, oil palm, and coconut [236][237][238][239]. These studies indicate the possibility of field infection by Phytophthora palmivora in susceptible plants.…”

“…Phytophthora pod rot disease caused by Phytophthora palmivora is one of the most dangerous global cocoa diseases and in Sulawesi, the disease is more rampant with a much greater impact than any kinds of biological cocoa pests and diseases [5][6][7][8] . The wet season is one of the main causes behind the disease prevalence since the range of ripening time and peak harvest is almost rainy season 9,10 .…”

“…The wet season is one of the main causes behind the disease prevalence since the range of ripening time and peak harvest is almost rainy season 9,10 . A wetter field triggers the cause of pod rot disease, P. palmivora, conveniently infecting the tree and pods 8,11 . The disease incidence in the wet season is much higher than dry season 10 .…”
