Phylogenetic analysis of the grape family (Vitaceae) based on three chloroplast markers

Abstract: Seventy-nine species representing 12 genera of Vitaceae were sequenced for the trnL-F spacer, 37 of which were subsequently sequenced for the atpB-rbcL spacer and the rps16 intron. Phylogenetic analysis of the combined data provided a fairly robust phylogeny for Vitaceae. Cayratia, Tetrastigma, and Cyphostemma form a clade. Cyphostemma and Tetrastigma are each monophyletic, and Cayratia may be paraphyletic. Ampelopsis is paraphyletic with the African Rhoicissus and the South American Cissus striata nested with… Show more

“…species and infra-specific taxa of Vitaceae to reconstruct the relationships within Vitaceae with the nuclear GAI1 sequences. The three major clades formerly recognized by Soejima & Wen (2006) were strongly supported by the GAI1 data. Particularly, the first clade was 100% supported by the GAI1 data compared to a less than 50% bootstrap (BS) value in the three plastid markers, and a close relationship between the core Cissus clade and the 5-merous clade was well supported.…”

“…Soejima and Wen (2006) included representatives of the genus in their broad analysis of Vitaceae. In the plastid data, three species of Parthenocissus were sampled, and they formed a clade with Yua austro-orientalis in the strict consensus tree with moderate bootstrap support of 76% ( Soejima and Wen, 2006 ).…”

“…The study of the structural and functional organization of the organelle genomes is also relevant from the point of view of modern taxonomy and phylogenetics. Until now, only a few chloroplast markers are used in studies of plant diversity and phylogeny (Soejima and Wen, 2006;Schroeder et al, 2011). With the advent of NextGeneration Sequencing (NGS) technologies, a real opportunity to use complete chloroplast genomes for the taxonomic and evolutionary studies was appeared (McPherson et al, 2013).…”
